Love is patient, love is kind. It is one of the most quoted chapters in the Bible, and people are often surprised it is not about romance at all. It is about how to treat people you live with, work with and argue with.

Read it substituting your own name for the word love. It is a challenging exercise, and a good one.

Try this: Pick one line (patient, kind, not easily angered, keeps no record of wrongs) and try to live it with one specific person today.

Day 2 · Ecclesiastes 4

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If either falls down, one can help the other up. And a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

This is a practical chapter about why we need each other. Isolation is not a virtue, and help is not weakness.

Try this: Reach out to someone you have not spoken to in a while and ask how they are really doing.

Day 3 · Proverbs 15

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The chapter is full of small lessons about how words either lower or raise the temperature of a home.

Most arguments are lost or won in the first sentence. This chapter is about picking your first sentence.

Try this: In your next tense conversation, start with a gentle sentence and see what changes.

Day 4 · Colossians 3

Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another. It is a wardrobe metaphor: decide what to put on each morning.

Above all these, put on love, which binds everything together in perfect unity.

Try this: Decide which quality you will wear today, and remind yourself of it before a difficult conversation.

Day 5 · Ephesians 5

The end of the chapter describes marriage as mutual, sacrificial love: submit to one another out of reverence for Christ, husbands love their wives as Christ loved the church, giving himself up for her.

Read as a whole, it is a picture of two people out-serving each other. That is a good test for any close relationship.

Try this: Do one unrequested act of service for a spouse, partner, roommate or close friend today.

Day 6 · Psalms 127

Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Children are a heritage from the Lord. This short psalm is about trusting God with what we build: homes, families, futures.

Parenting and homemaking are hard work, and this psalm says the outcome does not rest on your effort alone. That is a relief, not an excuse.

Try this: Say a short prayer for one child or young person in your life, by name.

Day 7 · 1 John 4

Since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. Love, in this letter, is not a feeling but a direction: it comes from God, flows through us, and shows up in how we treat others.

Perfect love drives out fear. Most relationships need less fear and more of that kind of love.

Try this: Tell someone plainly today that you love them or appreciate them, in words, not just actions.
